Pulsar PG10000B16 Dual Fuel Generator Review: Reliable?

For many users, a dual fuel generator is the best option as it offers more flexibility and convenience.

The Pulsar PG10000B16 Dual Fuel is a very reasonably priced generator that offers a ton of power.

It easily stands along some much pricier competition, which is why I included it in my top 10 best dual fuel generators post.

About the PG10000 Generator: Main Features Reviewed

Ultimately, Pulsar has taken many of the most important features you might hope for in a generator and made sure they included them in this high-value model.

Here are some of the most valuable features of the PG10000.

High Power

Why do you buy a generator? You need power! Pulsar is ready to provide it and this generator is a beast.

  • When using gas, it has 10,000 peak watts and 8000 rated watts.
  • When using liquid propane gas, it has 9000 peak watts and 7000 rated watts.

No matter what type of fuel you use, the power comes from the trustworthy 420cc, 15 HP, OHV, single-cylinder, 4-stroke, air-cooled engine.

It’s a workhorse that gets the job done.

Dual Fuel Capability

Dual fuel offers added convenience and value. There is a large fuel tank for unleaded gasoline.

If you prefer, you can use the included hose to hook up a tank of liquid propane gas.

The switch and go feature lets you switch from gas to propane or vice versa while the generator is running.

This can be a lifesaver and ensures that you could run the generator for 24 hours straight or longer, as needed.

Another advantage of dual fuel capability is that it helps you straddle the line between price and convenience.

At certain times, like during a natural disaster, one or the other type of fuel may be harder to come by and/or more expensive. Dual fuel gives you options.

Operation & Transport

Ease of use is definitely built into every aspect of this generator.

At over 200 pounds, the Pulsar PG10000B pretty heavy but a wheel kit and handle make it easy for even those without much strength to get around.

The wheels will never go flat. Starting it up is simple with an electric push button.

There is also a recoil starter backup if needed. Operating the controls is quite straightforward and user-friendly.

There is an hour-meter that helps you keep an eye how much time you have left before running out of fuel.

Outlets

There are plenty of places to plug things in, so this generator will keep all of your appliances, tools, and devices running.

There are:

  • Four 120V outlets
  • One 120V/240V twist-lock outlet
  • One 120/240V 50A RV receptacle

It’s fully ready to take on the road in your RV but it’s also a good model to keep on hand in the garage or basement in case of a power outage.

Noise Level

Generators are getting quieter and quieter all the time but with the big and powerful models, they are never going to be super quiet (click here for my “most silent” generators list post).

This is for sure a powerful machine and you will definitely hear it.

Naturally, it will be loudest when operated at a full load. There is no quiet eco mode on this generator like you’ll see on some other models.

Generally, this generator won’t be any quieter than 65 dBA and it will often be louder than 70 dBA.

The manual cautions that “prolonged exposure to noise levels above 68 DBA is hazardous to hearing” and recommends using ANSI-approved ear protection to prevent hearing damage.

When operating this generator at a full load, you might encounter a higher-pitched noise that is something like a whine.

The whine on top of the rough roar of the machine definitely calls for hearing protection when in close proximity.

Generally speaking, the Pulsar PG10000B Hybrid Fuel is going to be too loud for using on the campground or for tailgating.

For a backup home power source or for using on a remote worksite, though, the noise shouldn’t be a problem.

Gas Consumption & Capacity

The 8-gallon fuel tank is a great selling point of this model, as it will last a long time.

This is a relatively fuel-efficient model, as one tank of gasoline will get you about 12 hours of operation when running a half-load.

The beauty of a dual-fuel generator is that you can use both gasoline and liquid propane.

Combining the two fuel types means you can operate the generator for a much longer period before needing to refuel.

Switching between fuel types is simple and can even be done while the generator is running.

Service, manual & Warranty

The user manual for the Pulsar PB10000 clearly lays out the recommended maintenance schedule.

It explains how often you need to service the generator and tells you how to do it.

This includes things like changing the oil and checking the spark plugs and filters.

If you don’t follow the recommended maintenance schedule, you will void the warranty.

In the event that you need any servicing done outside of the basic maintenance, you will need to use an approved technician.

If you try a big repair on your own or if you have a technician perform it who isn’t an approved provider, you might inadvertently void the warranty.

The 3-year warranty is quite generous, certainly when compared to other generators of this size and capacity.

This limited warranty will cover replacement of any of the mechanical parts like the lasers, chips, and LEDs that are most likely to break.

It is very important, however, to register your generator within 30 days of purchase or the warranty won’t be valid. Without registering, you might end up facing down an expensive bill for replacement parts and service that you could have otherwise had covered.

Although this generator already offers good value considering its price point, the 3-year warranty makes the value even higher.

Online Customer reviews and Ratings

Overall, buyers seem to be very pleased with this generator. As of this writing, it has earned a 4.3-star average on Amazon.

For a product that requires this size of an investment, that’s particularly impressive.

Reviewers often compare it to other models, describing it as quieter and a better value than similar models.

Many buyers also describe it as easy to use and easy to transport.

This is particularly noteworthy for a model that is so heavy. The wheel kit and handle seem to make it easy for just about anyone to maneuver.

One of the most consistent cons you’ll see in customer reviews is that it tends to run fairly rough.

Potential Problems & Known Issues

One issue to be aware of with this generator is something to be aware of when buying any large and heavy product online. Some buyers have found that there was some damage in transit.

Luckily, it is possible to have a replacement sent at no cost to you if that happens.

This model of generator is known to run a bit rough but this isn’t anything to worry about.

You might encounter it almost shaking and sputtering a bit. This can be alarming but it’s definitely not unusual with this model. It won’t cause damage to any of your tools or appliances.

The other potential problems you might encounter are the same ones you’d see with any other generator.

This includes things like it not starting or starting but not seeming to power whatever you plug in (see this post if your generator won’t start).

When encountering common problems like these, you can check the manual and follow the troubleshooting steps.

More often than not, there is a simple fix like cleaning or changing the spark plug.

And typically, when you perform the recommended maintenance schedule, these kinds of issues will be extremely rare.

My Opinion: Should You Buy Pulsar's Generator?

As you might expect, this is really a personal decision that depends entirely on your unique needs and preferences.

If you want a generator that offers a lot of power for a reasonable price, it’s definitely worth considering.

It’s a very good value and it also offers the convenience of dual fuel.

But if you need a really powerful machine but want the absolute best product out there for your buck, the Pulsar PG10000B is probably the generator for you.

Looks should never be high on the list of why you choose one generator over another, but there is definitely something about the design of this beast as well.

Looking at it, you see the blend of a modern, high-tech machine and a dependable and powerful workhorse.

The blue, black, and white style looks great.

This is a machine you will definitely be proud to own.
