Duromax XP4400E
A generator is a tool with endless uses. It’s great for working in remote locations, camping, tailgating, and more. For many people, the major advantage of a generator is that it’s a great backup power source during unexpected power loss situations.

During a natural disaster, a generator can really save the day.

The best generator for the job, in this case, is a generator that is powerful and tough. The Duromax XP4400E is exactly that, and here is my review.

Engine, Tank Capacity

This Duromax generator has a 7 HP 4-stroke OHV single-cylinder engine with a forced-air cooling system.

This provides plenty of power. The gas tank holds just under 4 gallons of fuel, enough to keep the generator running for quite a while.

At a 50% load (about 1800W), it will last about 12 hours.

The fuel-efficient engine is EPA and CARB compliant.

This means that you are allowed to use it in California and within National Parks.

Electric Key Start & Wheel Kit

Key start on the xp4400E generator

A feature that really makes this generator stand out is the electric key start.

The majority of generators use a pull cable recoil starter and these come with several challenges.

Starting the Duromax XP4400E is as easy as turning the key in your car’s ignition.

In addition to the super convenient electric key start, another convenient feature of this generator is the wheel kit with a pull handle.

This is a pretty heavy machine and it can be a chore to lug it around.

The easy-to-install wheel kit makes transport easy.

Noise Level

When it comes to generators, this isn’t exactly the most quiet but it’s not as loud as you might expect either.

The volume will vary depending on load, but it should stay under 69 dB.

For reference, 70 dB is about as loud as a standard vacuum cleaner or a car on the freeway.

Potential Problems / Issues

The most common potential problems you might encounter with the XP4400E can be prevented with regular maintenance.

As laid out in the manual, there are several simple things to try if you are having one of the following common issues:

  • If the engine won’t start, the fuel valve or choke might be in the wrong position, the spark plug may be dirty or might need to be replaced, the oil is low, or it might just be that the generator needs to be moved to a level surface.
  • In case the engine starts but there is no electrical output, the circuit breaker might be in the wrong position or the connecting cables or device might be bad.
  • If the generator runs but won’t support all connected devices, it might be overloaded or the air cleaner could be dirty.

Maintenance, Oil type & Battery Replacement

Regular maintenance is necessary with all generators and this is no exception. You’ll need to regularly check the oil and periodically replace the oil.

The oil fill tank is in a slightly awkward position, underneath the main panel.

However, a funnel with a long length of flexible tubing is included with the generator and this makes it easy to fill the oil.

Changing the oil on a duromax xp4400 generator

The Duromax XP4400E uses 10W-30 SAE motor oil. There is an automatic engine shut-off if the oil gets too low.

In addition to checking and changing the oil, you’ll need to regularly check and periodically replace the air filter.

You’ll also need to occasionally clean the fuel filter cup and occasionally check and clean the spark plug.

The electric key start is battery powered and no battery lasts forever.

That said, this battery should last for a very long time. If you do need to replace it, the battery is a First Power FPM7-12 [12V7.0Ah] motorcycle battery.

You should ideally keep your generator clean, so in the event that it gets dirty, you can use a damp cloth and pressurized air to remove any debris.

It’s also a good idea to keep the generator covered when not in use.

A cover comes with the generator for this purpose. This is important because excessive dust could hurt the generator’s performance.

Wrapping It Up: Should You Buy It?

Do you have a legitimate need for a generator? Do you live in an area with a relatively high likelihood of a natural disaster?

A generator like the Duromax XP4400E that offers a lot of power in a durable package may be a wise investment.

Being prepared can make a huge difference and a generator is a must-have for anyone living in an area with a high likelihood of hurricanes or other natural disasters.

If you’re looking for a generator for camping or tailgating, this would certainly get the job done but it might be a little more than you need.

It offers a good amount of power. It’s also pretty heavy and bulky.

You might prefer a generator that is a bit easier to transport and that doesn’t have quite as much power.

If you’re looking for a generator for a worksite, the Duromax XP4400E is a great choice.

It has the power you need and the steel frame is tough and rugged and ready for anything.

This generator is an investment but it’s one that will pay off for years to come. Duromax generators are known for their durability.

As long as you take care of it with regular maintenance, it should be pretty trustworthy. The XP4400E offers excellent value, and for the amount of power and features you get, it’s at a very reasonable price point.

  1. I purchased 2 of these with full warranty. Within the third week one of them seized up. I tried to utilize the warranty i purchased with it but get nothing but the run around from the manufacturer and the store i bought it from. Very displeased with this product for the waste of money spent on it and customer service!

  2. i have a duromax xp4400e generator i can not find a replacement battery that will fit in the battery well that the fpm7-12 that came with the generator. does anyone know a motorcycle that will fit in my duromax xp4400e generator battery well.

    1. I am having the same problem – a battery I bought through Amazon that supposedly was for the Duromax xp4400e would not fit in the battery well. Also, my original battery has nut & bolt posts while practically all of the supposed replacements have a slip-on prong type of terminal (F2?). It has taken me hours of research and I’m tempted to just buy a new (non-Duromax) generator.
