Review : Briggs & Stratton P2200 Powersmart Series (30651) Generator

When shopping for the right generator, it is important to check for a few different features to ensure that you are getting the best generator for your specific use.

These may include wattage capacities, weight, types of electrical outlets, parallel capabilities, and noise levels.

Luckily, considering all of these factors, the Briggs & Stratton 30651 P2200 Powersmart Series Portable 2200-Watt inverter generator could be the right mix.

Utilising quiet power technology and delivering 200 starting watts, this generator can easily power a large appliance such as a refrigerator, oven, or electric skillet.

Functions and Ease of Use

Featuring a standard recoil pull start, the P2200 can easily be started by even the most novice generator user.

The rotary power knob resides right below the pull cord for easy access.

One of my favorite features of this Briggs & Stratton generator is the aesthetically pleasing control center.

The contrast between the silver, black, and red really give the generator character and make the white label easy to read.

This generator was built with user safety in mind, and you can tell this by the 3 power reset buttons and 1 main reset buttons located on the control panel.

A 3 LED indicator light setup is used to inform you of the current state of your generator.

  1. The first light indicates that the generator is operating perfectly.
  2. The second light only lights up when there is an overload of the system.
  3. The last light illuminates whenever your generator is low on oil.

This helps keeps your generator safe from overheating to prevent damage.

Built to power many different types of electrical appliances, the 30651 generator features two different types of power source receptacles.

The first is a 12V DC port that allows for any cigarette lighter style plug to be used. This is great for cell phones chargers, tablet charges, and any other 12v power source.

This generator also houses 2 120V electrical outlets for any household appliances that make it easy to power you through a black out or help out at your next tailgating event.

If you are needing to get more power, you can pick up two of these generator inverters and hook them up in parallel to get 4400 watts of starting power!

The parallel cord is sold separately from Briggs & Stratton and is very easy to use.

With all of these easy to use features, it’s no wonder why this generator has over 400 Amazon reviews at the time this article was published.

Noise Level - Is It Quiet?

When researching generators, it is important to understand how loud is considered too loud for a generator.

Generally, generator noise levels are measure in decibels at an industry standard of 23 feet away.

Many portable generators operate in the 70-80 decible range at ¼ load at 23 feet.

For reference, this is about the same noise level as a household vacuum cleaner.

With a 25% load, the noise rating from about 7 meters away is 59 dB.

According to the Industrial Noise Control, this is roughly the same noise level as a conversation at home.

When using a generator for home use or at a tailgate, the noise level can be very important as to not disturb any neighbors.

With the Briggs & Stratton Quiet Power Technology keeping this generator under 60 decibels at 25% load, this generator falls into the below-average noise level category of generators making it perfect for any situation.

Gas Consumption & Capacity

  • Rated Amps: 14.16 Amps @ 120 Volts
  • AC Maximum Output Starting Watts: 2200W
  • AC Rated Output Running Watts: 1700W
  • Rated AC Voltage: 120 VAC
  • Frequency: 50 Hz

This generator has a fuel capacity of one gallon that can produce up to 8 hours of run time when used at 25% load.

Increased load will decrease run time.

As stated above, this generator is parallel capable and can be connected to another P2200 inverter with Briggs & Stratton’s parallel cable that is sold separately.

This can provide you with 4400 starting watts and 3400 running watts to help power more appliances or even one larger appliance.

Service, Manual & Warranty

Two inverters plugged in parallel

Briggs & Stratton is a well known, industry leader in various industries.

They offer a 24 month consumer, 12 month commercial limited warranty.

This warranty protects you against any defectiveness in material or workmanship for the warranty period.

As with any product, this warranty will not cover any normal wear and tear of the generator.

To learn more about the warranty, Briggs & Stratton offers a copy of it digitally on their site.

While this generator is very easy to use, we highly suggest making yourself familiar with the included manual before using this generator.

You can also find a copy of the manual online to familiarize yourself with all of it’s features before you purchase as well.

Briggs & Stratton P2200 Portable Generator VS the Competition

Comparing this Briggs & Stratton generator against the competition shines light on why it is one of the highest rated inverters on the market.

The parallel abilities and quiet power technology are some of the favorite features of consumers.

P2200 VS Westinghouse iGen2200

  • Warranty: 3 years
  • USB Outlet: No
  • Weight: 54.6 pounds
  • Noise Level @1/4 load: 59 dB
  • Warranty: 3 Years
  • USB Outlet: Yes (2X)
  • Weight: 46 pounds
  • Noise Level @1/4 load: 52 dB

When comparing the Briggs & Stratton to Westinghouse’s iGen2200 inverter, we see a very close race.

Looking at prices, you are going to see just a slight increase with the Westinghouse, but not enough to make a huge purchasing decision difference.

The most noticeable feature is that the P2200 has a DC outlet whereas the iGen has a dual USB outlet.

This may not be a huge deal, but for those who are needing either, this may be something to consider.

As far as nose levels, the iGen operates at a slightly lower decibel rate of 52 dba where as the P2200 operates at 59 dba.

It also has a 12 hour run time at whereas the P2200 has about an 8 hour run time.

The biggest difference you will notice when transporting each is the weight.

The Westinghouse is about 10lbs lighter than the P2200.

P220° VS Honda EU2200i

  • Warranty: 3 years
  • Weight: 54.6 pounds
  • Noise Level @1/4 load: 59 dB
  • Warranty: 3 Years
  • Weight: 47 pounds
  • Noise Level @1/4 load: 48 dB

At almost twice the price, the Honda EU2200i has a few different features that may or may not be worth the extra price tag.

While producing the same amount of power, the Honda is able to do it at 48 db which is considerably lower than the Briggs & Stratton.

The Briggs & Stratton is slightly heavier than the Honda, but it does have multiple handles for easy help when transporting it.

Both of these generators are fairly lightweight, although Honda was able to shave a few more pounds off with this new version of the older EU2000I.

Run times are relatively the same which is a plus for each as 8 hours at 25% load is a great run time.

While the Honda seems to take the lead in this comparison, we will let you decide if these few extra features are worth double the price.

Online Reviews and Scores

Briggs & Stratton 2200 watts generator at a campfire

At the time that this article was published, this inverter generator had over 400 reviews on Amazon, one of the top rated generators in the 2000 watt category.

Out of these 400 reviews, over 70% were 4-5 star reviews with many of them expressing how quiet the generator is.

Many of the 1 star reviews revolve around the generator not working as needed out of the box.

This seems to have been solved many times with Briggs & Stratton’s excellent customer service and top notch warranty.

Potential Problems / Known Issues

After looking over the many 1 star reviews, it is easy to conclude that many consumer problems originate from first time uses.

These are ranging from no-start conditions to failures after running for 10-15 minutes.

While I cannot confirm the authenticity of correct usage, we can say the Briggs & Stratton’s warranty will cover most of these problems under their no hassle warranty.

To keep your generator running properly for years to come, I highly suggest familiarising yourself with the manual before operating this generator.

A proper Break-in is also a must-do.

Make note of the maintenance schedule as well to ensure you keep it running at peak performance and to avoid problems down the line.

In My Opinion: Should You Buy it?

When deciding whether the Briggs & Stratton 30651 P2200 is right for you, it is best to determine what you will be using the generator for the most and cross reference this guide to see if it fits your needs.

For me, this generator is perfect for tailgating, powering tools on a job site, or providing power for appliances during a blackout.

While it is not powerful enough to power larger appliances, you may be able to power your refrigerator with it depending on the wattage demands.

If noise is a concern, this generator should be on your list to check out as it operates quieter than most generators on the market.

If you are looking for a generator to power an RV, restore power to your whole home, or to run multiple large appliances, you may look toward a generator with a larger wattage capacity or run this inverter in parallel.

Considering all of these features and benefits, this generator is still one of the best buys at under $500 in the mid range power category
