There’s nothing quite like the great outdoors. But it isn’t so great when you don’t have access to power.
Even when you’re camping, you probably don’t want to disconnect entirely. You want to be able to charge your phone, power your RV, etc.

Unboxing the Generac GP2200i
I ordered the Generac quiet 2000-watt range generator right off amazon. Here is my unboxing and initial impressions:
Here are some of the critical features of the Generac GP2200I:

- Noise level: 60-70 dB

- Running wattage: 1,700 running watts
- Run time: 10.75 hours at 25% load, 7 hours at 50% load
- Fuel: gasoline
- Tank volume: 1.2 gallons
- Number of ports: 4
- Economy mode: yes; reduces fuel usage and sound emissions

What Can It Power?
This portable inverter generator allows you to connect with your devices. Its TruePower™ Technology provides clean, stable power ideal for sensitive electronics, tools, and appliances.
So, you can use it to charge your mobile devices and power your TV, microwave, space heater, etc.
Wondering how long the generator can power your devices? It has a run time of 7 hours at a 50% load. If you want it to run longer, you can get 10.75 hours at a 25% load.
What Can’t It Power?
The GP2200I portable inverter generator is handy. But it isn’t limitless.
It can only provide a total wattage of up to 2,200. You need to be careful not to draw too much power out of it. If you plug in too many devices, you might damage your appliances or the generator.
An important note: The GP2200I only has four ports. This number can be limiting, especially if you have more than four devices that you want to charge simultaneously.
Calculating Energy Use
Before buying, ensure that this generator meets your power needs. Do this by determining what devices you need to power and how many watts they require. Add up these numbers and see if it exceeds 2,200.
For instance, let’s say you need to power a toaster (1,200 watts), space heater (1,800 watts), and microwave (1,000) all at once. This 2200-watt generator won’t be sufficient to power these devices at the same time. You’ll want something with higher power output.
Generac GP2200I Warranty
Generac (AKA Generac Holdings Inc.) is an American manufacturer of power systems. It produces some of the best generators on the market. When you buy any of the brand’s generators (including the GP2200I), you can expect a high-quality product.
But, if you do run into any problems, you’ll be glad to hear that there’s a warranty. Customers get 1-year limited coverage for labor and 2-year limited coverage for parts.
Because of Generac’s commitment to high-quality products, it’s unlikely you’ll need the help. But in the event you do, there’s a friendly customer service team waiting.
You can contact support 24/7 for fast, helpful answers. You can also send an email or use Generac’s online troubleshooting guides.
Here are just a few reasons why we loved the Generac GP2200I:
4 Ready-to-Use Outlets
The Generac GP2200I comes with four ready-to-use outlets.
The 120V 20A 5-20R duplex features two standard wall outlets. They will charge your electronics, tools, and appliances.
With this generator, you also get a 12V DC port and a 1.5A USB port. They give you even more flexibility when it comes to charging your devices.
Integrated Off/Run/Choke Knob Simplifies Startup Procedures
The integrated knob makes startup super easy. All you have to do is turn it to the desired position.
When first starting your generator, you’ll want to turn it to “choke” to help the engine warm up. Turning it to “run” will provide power to your devices. “Off,” of course, shuts off the engine.
If you don’t like messing with devices, you’ll appreciate this generator’s simple startup procedures.
Convenient LED indicators alert you when the generator is low on oil, overloaded, or ready to use. This feature helps you stay in-the-know and take care of your unit.
Portable inverter generators have lots of advantages. Unfortunately, they come at the cost of less power.
The GP2200I does a decent job of providing the most power possible. It has 2200-watt output, which is a lot for a portable inverter generator. You can use it to charge several devices at once (including mobile devices).
Alone, this 22000-watt generator might not be enough to power all of your devices. “Parallel ready” allows you to connect two GP2200i inverter generators.
Parallel capability is a great feature to have. It will help you charge more devices as it provides twice the power low output units cannot deliver independently. However, buying two generators can be quite an investment, so be cautious about your budget.
Low Oil Level Shutdown Safeguards Engine from Incurring Damage
The LED indicators go a long way in helping you maintain your generator. They let you know when your unit is low on oil or requires maintenance.
However, it’s nice to have a mechanism kick in when you can’t perform maintenance immediately. The low oil level shutdown automatically safeguards engine from incurring damage. It will turn off your generator until you refill the oil.
Low Noise Levels
Generac doesn’t report the exact noise level of this generator.
By our measurements, it came out to around 60-70 dB. The volume is soft enough to prevent you from disturbing neighbors or surrounding wildlife.
Everyone will like that the quiet and neighbor-friendly fully enclosed design dramatically reduces noise levels.
TruePower™ Technology Provides Clean Power
TruePower™ Technology provides clean, stable power ideal for sensitive electronics, tools, and appliances. You don’t have to worry about it damaging your phones, laptops, and other devices.
Compact and Lightweight
The generator doesn’t just power tools and appliances. Compact and lightweight, it is easy to take on-the-go. It won’t take up too much space. And, one person can carry it with the built-in handle.
Economy Mode Automatically Adjusts Engine Speeds
One of the coolest features of this generator is its Economy Mode. Economy Mode automatically adjusts engine speeds. It will provide the most efficient power for your devices, save on fuel, and cut down on noise.
Outlets exposed to the elements can quickly become damaged. The damage will prevent you from being able to charge your devices.
Luckily, the Generac GP2200I comes with covered outlets. The covers are sturdy and will keep out dirt, water, etc.
This inverter generator provides outdoor enthusiasts with a great power solution. However, it has a few drawbacks worth mentioning:
Lacks Remote Start
Some inverter generators come with a key fob. It lets you start the engine remotely.
The Generac GP2200I only has an integrated off/run/choke knob.
However, the lack of remote start isn’t a huge deal. Indeed, the sole integrated off/run/choke knob is perfect if you want to keep things simple.
Noise Level Not as Low as We’d Like It to Be
As mentioned, the fully enclosed design dramatically reduces noise levels. Users report that the dB level is around 60-70.
However, this decibel is a little loud for an inverter generator. Inverter generators tend to be quieter with a dB level of around 50 or so.
If noise is a primary concern for you, you might opt for a quieter generator.
No LED Data Center
Many inverter generators come with an LED data center. This display is usually on the control panel and shows essential stats like:
- Power output
- Fuel level
- Lifetime run hours
These stats help you know what’s going on with your generator and take care of it. Unfortunately, the GP2200I does not have a built-in LED data center.
This lack of display can leave you feeling in-the-dark. You never know exactly how much fuel you have left or how high the power output is.
If you prioritize seeing these kinds of stats, you might want to go with another model.
Overall, customers rave about the Generac GP2200I. It has nearly 1,500 reviews on Amazon that amount to a near 5-star rating. Other review sites boast similar results.
Customers love that it provides the power you need without disturbing neighbors. Other favorite features include:
- Quiet and neighbor-friendly unit designed to reduce sound emissions
- Integrated off/run/choke knob simplifies startup procedures
- LED indicators alert you if the unit is low on oil, overloaded, or ready to use
- Provides the stable power you need for sensitive electronics, tools, and appliances
- Compact and lightweight (makes transportation easy with built-in handle)
- USB port for charging mobile devices
- Parallel ready lets you provide twice the power
- Low oil level sensor that will automatically shut down the unit

How Much Is a Generac 2200 Generator?
But, before you add to cart, shop around. You might get a better price if you go third-party. For instance, Amazon currently has the generator listed for about $500. Just be sure to verify that the third-party seller you choose is reputable.
Note: If you want to use the GP2200I’s parallel capability, you will have to buy two units. You will also have to purchase a parallel kit (sold separately).
Which Is Better: Generac or Honda Generator?
Below, we provide a brief comparison of two similar products (Generac’s GP2200I and Honda’s EU2200i). You can use the information to make your judgment.
As evident by their names, both units are 2,200-watt generators. It means they have the same starting wattage to boost your appliances. However, the EU2200I has a slightly higher running wattage (1,800) than the GP2200I (1,700).
Both units take up the same amount of space, have a THD of less than 3%, and lack an LED center. Both also run on gas and have a conventional recoil start.
As for differences, the GP2200I is slightly louder. The GP2200I also has a higher run time and a lower rate of fuel consumption. The EU2200I gains points for portability as it is slightly lighter. However, each makes transportation easy thanks to a sturdy carrying handle.
What Is the Best Inverter Generator?
- Has enough power to charge your devices
- Provides clean power that is suitable for your sensitive electronics
- Is easy to transport
- Has parallel capability
- Produces little noise
- Comes with easy startup
- Has an LED data center
We’d go as far as to say that the Generac GP2200I is the best inverter generator. It has pretty much everything you need to power your devices away from home. It is compact, portable, and produces little noise. You (and your neighbors) will come to appreciate everything it can do.
What Will a 2200-Watt Generator Run?
- Electric lawnmower
- Cell phone battery charger
- Security system
- Box fan
- Outdoor light strings
Keep in mind that this generator can’t run all of these devices at once. It only has so many ports and power output. Be sure to calculate the required wattage of the devices you want to power. This way, you won’t overload the generator.
